On the contrary, painting snow in Canary </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">Islands was something relatively interesting.</span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">&nbsp;</span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500; font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">How was your work on water slides perceived </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">in Germany? At the time your work focussed on drawing, </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">that dry and faster technique. Since then, drawing has </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">become the main medium in your work. </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">Now,I’d like you to comment on your folded towels </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">and their Picasso-like forms, and your pool rafts and </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">images of disasters.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">&nbsp;</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\"> I have to say that my mother works in the </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">tourist sector, so my house is a kind of store of </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">remains of tourists. I don’t mean human remains </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">[laughter], but remains of experiences related to </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">tourism,such as souvenirs. </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">The use of pool rafts is a way to go on developing </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">the concept of “sliding” but in a passive way. It was</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">fun to make those works; they allowed me to </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">make jokes about the history of contemporary art, </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">while dealing with the topics I was interested in:</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">tourism and the identity of local people living in </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">prefabricated cities with no identity. I considered </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">theme parks cultural and political spaces.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">Regarding the towels, they talked about the </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">landscape, about the same kind of contradictions </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">you can find in souvenirs. Their wrinkles created </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">Picasso-likeimages — the same fun game was </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">presentin them — but to me they represented </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">a kind of enclosed space. </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">At the time, I was obsessed with maps, with </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">folded maps that prevented you from seeing </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">some of the parts of the orography. The space of </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">thetowel was private. Also, printed images on</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">thetowels represented a place. It was a kind of </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">game of mirrors, a loop continuously referring to </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">thelandscape, but in very different ways, in ways</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">that didn’t make sense. For example, on one of the </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">towels there was a painted tiger. It was a reference </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">to Gran Canaria. The towel was on the beach, on </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">the island, but the tiger didn’t really refer to Gran </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">Canaria since there are no tigers here. I processed </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">the images in order to remove the coldness </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">characteristic of images made for tourists in </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">different destinations.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">&nbsp;</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500; font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\"> You’ve talked several times about </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">self-referential jokes or jokes in reference to art </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">history. Also you’re constantly concerned about </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">giving your works a warm touch. What’s the </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">importance of jokes in your work? How is humour </span><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">to be understood in your work?</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500; font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">&nbsp;</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 28px; font-size: 22px; text-indent: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\"> I can’t simply get rid of that referential </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">aspect since I consider it necessary. It’s a means </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">to talk about things that are around us. These are unsubstantial points, but, </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">at the same time, they give to the work a </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">playful touch. I don’t like to utter categorical </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">and accurate things. </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">That way I undo the solemnity of the work of </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">art. Recently I was talking to Paco Guillén about </span></span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: vcxq; color: #f7f7f7;\">solemnity in the work of art.
